What is LibreOffice?

Do more – easily, quickly

LibreOffice is a powerful and free office suite, used by millions of people around the world. Its clean interface and feature-rich tools help you unleash your creativity and enhance your productivity. LibreOffice includes several applications that make it the most versatile Free and Open Source office suite on the market: Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations), Draw (vector graphics and flowcharts), Base (databases), and Math (formula editing).

Finally, documents that look good

Your documents will look professional and clean, regardless of their purpose: a letter, a master thesis, a brochure, financial reports, marketing presentations, technical drawings and diagrams. LibreOffice makes your work look great while you focus on the content.

Use documents of all kinds

LibreOffice is compatible with a wide range of document formats such as Microsoft® Word (.doc, .docx), Excel (.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx) and Publisher. But LibreOffice goes much further with its native support for a modern and open standard, the Open Document Format (ODF). With LibreOffice, you have maximum control over your data and content – and you can export your work in many different formats including PDF.

Get more features with extensions

Beyond the many features shipped by default, LibreOffice is easily extensible through its powerful extensions mechanisms. Get even more features and document templates on our dedicated websites.

Free as in Freedom, now and forever

LibreOffice is Free and Open Source Software, available for everyone to use, share and modify, and produced by a worldwide community of hundreds of developers. Our software is tested and used daily by a large and devoted user community – we're open to new talent and new ideas, so get involved and influence its future.

Built on a strong heritage

LibreOffice is a successor to OpenOffice.org (commonly known as OpenOffice), which in turn was based on StarOffice. Many years of development have gone into the software, and it has been used in its various incarnations by millions. Today, LibreOffice is by far the most active continuation of the OpenOffice.org codebase, with releases every six months and hundreds of contributors. Also, LibreOffice uses libraries from the Document Liberation Project, handing control back to content creators.

New Features

Next-level NotebookBar

The NotebookBar user interface, introduced in LibreOffice 6.2, has been further improved in version 6.3. The Tabbed Compact mode, in the View menu, provides more space for your documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Watch this video to see how it works - and learn about the other new features in this release:

Scorching performance

Performance has been improved, especially for documents with many bookmarks, tables and embedded fonts. Loading and saving certain documents is now up to 90% faster than in LibreOffice 6.2.

Better security and compatibility

You can now redact your documents to remove or hide sensitive information. This can help your company or organisation to comply with regulations. In addition, documents can be exported as .dotx and .xltx templates, for better compatibility with Microsoft Office, while support for PDF/A-2 has been implemented.

Power up your spreadsheets

In Calc, a new drop-down widget in the formula bar replaces the old Sum tool, giving the user quick access to the most frequently used functions. Also, a new FOURIER function has been added, to compute the discrete Fourier transform of an input array.

LibreOffice Online - your office suite, anywhere

In LibreOffice Online, the cloud-based version of the suite, you can now view Microsoft Visio files. In addition, it's now possible to add and edit watermarks, while conditional formatting features have been added to Calc.

Further details

For a full list of new features in LibreOffice 6.3, see our release notes.

LibreOffice is Free Software that would not be possible without The Document Foundation and its volunteer contributors. For this release we would particularly like to thank the developers listed for their tremendous work and effort inside our release notes. You can contribute to the LibreOffice and Document Liberation Project as well – see how you can get involved.

System Requirements

The software and hardware prerequisites for installing LibreOffice on a Windows system are as follows:

Microsoft Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, or Windows 10

256 MB RAM (512 MB RAM recommended)
Up to 1.5 GB available hard disk space
1024x768 resolution (higher resolution recommended), with at least 256 colors

Administrator rights are needed for the installation process. It is a recommended best practice to back up your system and data before you remove or install software.

For certain features of the software - but not most - Java is required. Java is notably required for Base.
